Job Overview – Substance Abuse Counselor (CADC/LSW/LAC):
Compensation: $30 – $35/hour
Location: Paterson, NJ
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Our client is hiring a Substance Abuse Counselor in Paterson, NJ, to support outpatient behavioral health services in a clinical setting. This role includes conducting substance use assessments, diagnosing using DSM-5, and developing individualized treatment plans guided by ASAM Criteria. The ideal candidate will have experience in counseling and working with clinical documentation systems such as NJSAMS.
Responsibilities as the Substance Abuse Counselor:
Conduct Clinical Assessments: Perform substance use evaluations using ASI and DSM-5, and determine appropriate care levels based on ASAM Criteria.
Develop Treatment Plans: Create and regularly update individualized, recovery-focused treatment plans with measurable goals in coordination with the clinical team.
Provide Counseling Services: Deliver individual and group counseling aligned with treatment objectives and clinical best practices.
Monitor Progress & Adjust Care: Evaluate client progress using ASAM Criteria and modify treatment plans as needed, including preparing discharge or transfer documentation.
Ensure Collaboration & Compliance: Coordinate care with external partners and maintain accurate, compliant documentation in line with state and licensure requirements.
Qualifications for the Substance Abuse Counselor:
Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling strongly preferred.
Licensure: Must hold an active LSW, LAC, or CADC license, with LCADC preferred.
Certification: CADC certification is required.
Experience: 1-3 years of counseling experience with demonstrated knowledge of 12-Step programs and ASAM Criteria.
Technical Skills: Proficient in using electronic clinical records systems, preferably NJSAMS, with the ability to interpret assessment tools and apply treatment guidelines accurately.
Attributes: Empathetic, collaborative, and well-organized with the ability to engage diverse populations in treatment and recovery support.
